EverQuest, Planetside Co-Creator Reveals Open-World Shooter Game 'Reaper Actual'
John Smedley, the co-creator of EverQuest and Planetside, has announced his new studio, Distinct Possibility Studios, and its first game, Reaper Actual. This open-world PC shooter features an expansive island environment for players to defend and upgrade user-owned bases, which can be acquired as NFTs or via traditional platforms. The game includes a large multiplayer map that is four times bigger than Call of Duty: Warzone's Al Mazrah, with players attacking bases to steal items. Distinct Possibility raised $30.5 million in funding for the project, aiming for a pre-alpha release soon, followed by a full launch next year and a transition to free-to-play afterwards. Players can participate in missions for five AI factions, fostering conflict and cooperation within the game. The innovative approach combines elements of traditional gameplay with crypto integration, allowing players to trade in-game items on both Steam and an NFT marketplace. Smedley anticipates significant player adoption, framing this as an opportunity to successfully introduce Web3 principles to traditional gamers.
