Crypto needs more no-fee, open-source payment tools
A crypto researcher has developed an open-source payment processor, dubbed FreePay, which enables users to make fee-less payments via mobile crypto wallets like MetaMask. The device, demonstrated by Tim Robinson of BlueYard, includes an NFC reader and a display for sellers to enter amounts. While FreePay currently supports only MetaMask and Coinbase Wallets, it is open-source, allowing for future expansions to other chains and wallets. This development comes amidst a trend of crypto firms launching payment cards that rely on traditional processors such as Visa and Mastercard, which impose fees that can significantly affect businesses and customers. Though blockchain transactions come with their own costs, they often remain lower than credit card fees. Robinson emphasizes the importance of decentralization in technology, advocating for a shift away from centralized payment systems. The article concludes by reflecting on the original objectives of Bitcoin and the need for the crypto industry to embrace more open-source solutions that prioritize decentralization over profit maximization.
