World Mobile is launching a blockchain-enabled 5G network that utilizes drones to provide connectivity globally, in partnership with Indonesian telecom firm Protelindo. The project aims to close gaps left by conventional communication infrastructures. Hydrogen-powered drones will operate at 60,000 feet, covering 15,000 square kilometers each with minimal latency compared to satellite systems, promising services at lower costs. Maintaining such a network presents technical and regulatory hurdles, including compliance with aviation authorities. Each drone has a nine-day flight capability, necessitating lightweight fuel sources and durable construction to withstand environmental conditions. The company faces competition from decentralized networks like Helium Mobile, and space-based platforms such as Starlink, which serve different market segments. Starlink targets remote areas requiring connectivity, while World Mobile’s solution is aimed at denser user environments. The satellite communications sector is projected to expand significantly in the coming years.
