Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has called for the adoption of ‘copyleft’ open-source licenses within the crypto industry, emphasizing the need to rekindle its collaborative spirit. In a recent blog post, he shifted from his prior support for permissive licenses, which allow for free sharing and modification of code, to advocating for copyleft licenses, which require that any derivative works are also shared under the same terms. Buterin expressed his philosophical aversion to copyright, arguing that private sharing should not be criminalized. He noted that as crypto has become more competitive and less cooperative, simply encouraging voluntary sharing is no longer adequate. He believes that copyleft licensing enforces reciprocity, ensuring that innovations benefit the entire community rather than just a few companies. He concluded that the value of copyleft in incentivizing open source has grown as both mainstream enterprises and crypto projects seek to leverage shared resources for mutual growth.
