US to publish economic data on blockchain, Commerce chief says
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced that the Department of Commerce will start publishing economic statistics, including GDP data, on the blockchain. This initiative, discussed at a recent White House cabinet meeting, intends to enhance blockchain-based data distribution across various government agencies. The program will initially focus on GDP figures, with potential expansion to other federal departments after refining the implementation details. Other countries have successfully integrated blockchain into public administration, with examples from Estonia's e-Health system to Europe's EBSI project. The plan comes amidst President Donald Trump's skepticism about the reliability of US economic data, as he has previously dismissed reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and criticized economic forecasts. While blockchain can provide secure data storage and transparent sharing, it does not directly address the accuracy of the data being reported.
