US to publish economic data on blockchain, Commerce chief says
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced that the Department of Commerce will start publishing economic statistics, such as gross domestic product (GDP) data, on the blockchain. This initiative aims to facilitate blockchain-based data distribution across government agencies, emphasizing transparency and trustworthiness in economic reporting. The effort will kick off with GDP figures and may expand to other federal departments once logistical details are finalized. Other nations have successfully integrated blockchain technology into public administration, with examples including Estonia's e-Health system and the European Blockchain Partnership's network for verifiable public services. The move comes amidst skepticism regarding the accuracy of US economic data, particularly as former President Trump has expressed doubts about various economic reports. While blockchain offers secure and transparent data handling, it does not ensure the accuracy of the information itself.
