US seeks to claim $2.4M in Bitcoin seized from ransomware group
The United States has filed a civil complaint in the Northern District of Texas to claim $2.4 million worth of Bitcoin, specifically 20.2 BTC, seized by the Dallas FBI from the Chaos ransomware group. This action is part of the US's proposed Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, which aims to accumulate Bitcoin seized through criminal activities. The seizure, executed on April 15, was described by the Texas US Attorney’s Office as proceeds from unlawful activities related to ransomware. Recent findings indicated significant discrepancies regarding the actual Bitcoin holdings of the US government. According to various sources, the US could hold approximately 198,012 BTC from previous seizures, although a freedom of information request revealed that the United States Marshals Service reported only 28,988 BTC in their custody, not accounting for other government agencies like the FBI and DEA. At least 30 states have proposed similar Bitcoin reserve legislation, with only a few states like Arizona, Texas, and New Hampshire passing related laws as of July 29.
