The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced a public roundtable on financial surveillance and privacy, scheduled for October 17, led by Commissioner Hester Peirce. This roundtable will be the sixth held since the exit of former SEC Chair Gary Gensler. Peirce highlighted that understanding recent developments in privacy protection will aid regulators in formulating crypto policies. The task force has previously hosted roundtables to explore digital asset regulation and is considering proposed rule changes that could significantly affect market participants. This includes potential exemptions concerning the sale of crypto assets and modifications to broker-dealer financial responsibility rules. The SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) have softened their enforcement stance by discontinuing some investigations. A new digital asset market structure bill, known as the Responsible Financial Innovation Act, is under consideration in Congress, aiming for passage before 2026, following calls from lawmakers.
