Tristan Thompson Taps Somnia to Bring Basketball Fandom On-Chain
NBA champion Tristan Thompson is launching a new web3 experience called basketball.fun in October, designed to transform how fans engage with basketball. This platform will tokenize NBA players, allowing fans to speculate on player values in real time based on performance and sentiment. Developed on Somnia, a recently launched Layer 1 blockchain, the app seeks to empower fans by enabling them to create rosters, predict player success, and earn rewards, separating fan valuation from that of team owners and networks. Unlike traditional fantasy sports, the system does not rely on a native token for operation, focusing instead on gamification and sustainable infrastructure. Somnia has already seen significant trading volume and aims to create a user-friendly experience for both crypto enthusiasts and casual basketball fans alike. The project is a collaboration with Herman Narula and Hadi Teherany from Improbable, which emphasizes long-term growth over short-term token speculation. A major reveal is planned for Korea Blockchain Week, where attendees will learn more about the platform and its roadmap.
