Tornado Cash developer found guilty on 1 count in partial verdict
Roman Storm, a developer of the cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash, was found guilty of conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitter business after a four-day jury deliberation. The jury could not reach a unanimous decision on two other counts: conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to violate the IEEPA. The prosecution sought to remand Storm into custody, citing his financial means and Russian ties, but the judge ruled he could remain out on bond. The trial, which lasted about three weeks, saw the government argue that Storm aided illicit actors in concealing funds through Tornado Cash, while the defense maintained that he had no criminal intent. Tornado Cash was designed as a privacy tool for users wishing to keep financial transactions confidential. The outcome remains uncertain for the unresolved counts, as the government may choose to retry Storm.
