Streaming content creator Kitboga has devised a unique method to combat scammers who use Bitcoin ATMs to defraud victims, wasting an estimated 4,000 hours of their time. By creating a fake Bitcoin ATM receipt linked to a non-existent exchange, Kitboga has trapped scammers into a convoluted maze involving tedious tasks and automated systems that waste their time—and it serves as a tool to gather valuable intelligence on these malicious actors. Over a year, this scheme has ensnared about 500 scammers for 164 days total, with the average duration of scams lasting nearly three hours. Many scammers find themselves navigating baffling menus and holding for extended periods, while repeating silly phrases. Kitboga's strategy not only seeks to entertain viewers but also aims at collecting actionable information to assist law enforcement in shutting down these fraudulent operations. Partnering with the exchange Kraken, he facilitates freezing the funds of scammers when information is gathered. Now expanding his efforts, Kitboga plans to develop similar traps for other types of scams involving gift cards and cash.
