Tether has announced it will cease support for USDT on the Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash's Simple Ledger Protocol, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand, effective September 1, 2025. The firm cites a significant decline in the usage of USDT across these networks over the past two years, prompting a shift in focus toward more scalable platforms like Layer 2 networks and newer blockchains. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized that moving away from these lesser-utilized chains allows Tether to concentrate on systems with higher scalability and developer engagement which are essential for stablecoin adoption. As part of this transition, Tether urges customers with USDT on these networks to redeem their holdings promptly or migrate their assets to supported blockchains. Currently, most of Tether's USDT, valued at approximately $156 billion, is circulating on Tron and Ethereum, which together account for over 95% of the total supply, with Solana also holding a minor share.
