Tether has decided not to proceed with plans to freeze USDT smart contracts on five blockchains: Omni, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand. This change allows users to continue transferring tokens on those chains, although Tether will no longer issue or redeem tokens on them. The decision followed feedback from the communities of these blockchains. Tether will still focus on supporting chains that demonstrate strong developer activity and user demand, namely Tron and Ethereum, which account for the majority of USDT adoption. Tron leads with $80.9 billion in circulating USDT, followed by Ethereum at $72.4 billion. The Omni Layer is the most affected, holding a net circulation of $82.9 million USDT. This move marks the culmination of a two-year review process by Tether regarding its support for these platforms. Despite these changes, Tether aims to maintain a limited presence in these ecosystems while prioritizing chains that have thrived in user adoption and practical use cases.
