Tea App Exposes 72,000 IDs in Security Breach
The women-only dating app Tea experienced a significant data breach, exposing over 72,000 selfies, IDs, and private messages due to its unsecured database. Hackers discovered that the app had no password protection or encryption, allowing sensitive user information to spread rapidly online. The leaked data included government-issued IDs and selfies used for user verification, as well as private messages dated as recently as 2024 and 2025, contrary to claims that only ''old data'' had been compromised. Tea, which had recently gained popularity with over 4 million users, aimed to create a safe space for women but inadvertently compromised its users' safety. Critics pointed to poor coding practices, termed ''vibe coding,'' that contributed to the breach, highlighting potential flaws in relying too heavily on AI-generated code. Users are now advised to seek credit monitoring services and be cautious as their information could be searchable and publicly available.
