Sweden’s Justice Minister Says To ‘Turn Up The Pressure’ On Crypto Seizures
Sweden’s Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer is urging local authorities to enhance efforts in seizing assets, especially cryptocurrencies, under a new law enacted in 2024. This law permits confiscation of luxury items and cash from individuals, even if they are not under investigation. Since the law's implementation, more than $8.3 million in criminal proceeds has been seized, although it's unclear how much of this is directly linked to crypto. Authorities are focusing on cases that may result in finding crypto proceeds, real estate, and corporate assets. The intent behind the legislation is to address rising violent crime in Sweden, though it has sparked controversy due to its broad implications. In a separate push, MP Rickard Nordin has proposed the country consider Bitcoin as a reserve asset, suggesting that Sweden might follow the United States' example of maintaining a national crypto reserve without liquidating seized assets.
