Sweden's Minister of Justice, Gunnar Strömmer, has urged law enforcement agencies to enhance efforts to seize criminal assets, particularly cryptocurrencies. He emphasized the importance of utilizing forfeiture legislation implemented last year, which allows authorities to confiscate property even without proving an offence has occurred. This approach enables the seizure of cryptocurrency if the individual cannot adequately explain its origin. Strömmer has noted that the new legislation is among the strictest in Europe, with $8.4 million worth of property seized so far. The push for increased seizures coincides with discussions among lawmakers about establishing a national Bitcoin reserve, similar to initiatives in other nations. One advocate, Dennis Dioukarev from the Sweden Democrats, supports the notion of transferring confiscated cryptocurrencies to the central bank to create this reserve. Reports indicate a significant number of individuals connected to criminal networks utilized cryptocurrencies, prompting further calls for law enforcement to strengthen its presence in the crypto exchange sphere.
