A scammer impersonating a senior police officer in the UK has stolen $2.8 million worth of Bitcoin from a victim in a sophisticated scam. The North Wales Police reported that the perpetrator contacted the victim, claiming to have arrested an individual with the victim's identification documents, which induced fear and urgency. The victim was misled into believing they needed to secure their assets by logging into their crypto cold wallet using a link provided by the scammer. Unfortunately, the victim entered their seed phrase on a fake website, allowing the scammer to gain access to their wallet and withdraw the funds. The police are now investigating the incident and are working to trace the stolen assets. They advised the public to be wary of unsolicited calls from individuals claiming to be law enforcement regarding crypto assets, emphasizing that legitimate police will never ask for sensitive information or actions related to cryptocurrencies over the phone.
