Russia's Energy Ministry has initiated a national registry of crypto mining rigs aimed at identifying miners evading tax obligations and stealing power. This new register, developed in cooperation with the Federal Tax Service and the Ministry of Digital Development, is particularly focused on regions with a notable presence of miners. Despite efforts to bring miners into compliance, only 30% have registered since late 2024. Deputy Energy Minister Petr Konyushenko stated that the register will facilitate accurate tracking of electricity usage by miners, enabling targeted regulation and taxation. Furthermore, some regions in Russia have imposed bans on crypto mining to prevent illegal activities and energy overconsumption, expected to last until March 15, 2031. Authorities have already taken action against illegal operations, including shutting down a mining site siphoning electricity from a village. New legislation is also being considered to increase fines for illegal mining activities significantly. These moves reflect Russia's efforts to regulate and control the growing crypto mining industry while ensuring legality and reducing energy theft.
