Roman Storm Urges Crypto Community To Donate $500k
Roman Storm, co-founder of the crypto mixing service Tornado Cash, has made an urgent plea for $500,000 in donations ahead of his trial on money laundering and sanctions violations, scheduled to begin on Monday. So far, $1.96 million has been raised towards an estimated total legal cost of $3.5 million, which has increased due to unforeseen complexities in the case, potentially extending the trial to four weeks. Storm was arrested in August 2023 and now faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted. He emphasized the importance of defending open-source software development against government overreach and called on the crypto community to help cover his legal expenses. The Ethereum Foundation has pledged a $500,000 donation and offered to match community contributions up to $750,000, while MetaCartel has contributed its remaining treasury funds to the cause.
