Robinhood’s OpenAI and SpaceX Tokens Under EU Investigation
Robinhood's offerings of OpenAI and SpaceX tokens are under scrutiny by the European Union after OpenAI warned investors that these tokens do not represent an equity stake in the companies. This caution prompted an inquiry by the Bank of Lithuania, the primary regulator for Robinhood in the region. The central bank is currently awaiting further information to assess the legality of these stock token offerings. Robinhood's move into tokenization included the launch of a layer-2 blockchain to support tokenized securities in the EU, offering over 200 US stock and ETF tokens to European investors. However, concerns specifically target private equity tokens for non-public companies like OpenAI and SpaceX, which OpenAI clarified do not equate to actual equity holdings. The market for tokenization is estimated to exceed $24 billion, with financial institutions entering due to potential advantages such as improved settlement times and increased liquidity.
