Reddit Considers Iris-Scanning Orbs for User Verification
Reddit is reportedly contemplating the use of iris-scanning technology from World, developed by Tools for Humanity, as part of its user verification system. A report by Semafor suggests that this system would help ensure Redditors verify their uniqueness while still possibly maintaining their anonymity. However, this proposal has sparked significant backlash, with many users threatening to delete their accounts over privacy concerns. CEO Steve Huffman has indicated that Reddit will need to gather more user information to comply with regulatory requirements, particularly concerning user age, but emphasized that they do not wish to know users’ identities. The World project has already faced lobbying efforts against its biometric data collection, and as of May, over 12 million people had scanned their irises. The Match Group and Visa are also exploring the implementation of World ID in their services, highlighting a trend towards biometric verification across platforms.
