Paraguay warns of ‘irregular activity’ after post claiming BTC is legal tender
Paraguayan President Santiago Peña's official office refuted a claim made on social media that Bitcoin was recognized as legal tender in Paraguay. An initial post from Peña's account announced the country would adopt Bitcoin as legal tender and set up a BTC reserve worth $5 million. However, the president's office urged the public to ignore information not confirmed through official channels. This clarification came soon after, indicating that the office was working with the social media platform to resolve the confusion. The reaction follows a trend among some Central and South American countries considering adopting cryptocurrency following El Salvador’s example, which recognized Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, despite its legal status remaining ambiguous after recent developments.
