OpenAI, Oracle expand $500B Stargate spend as Musk unveils bold xAI plan
OpenAI and Oracle have announced a significant expansion of the Stargate project, adding 4.5 gigawatts (GW) of AI power to create a total of over 5 GW. This initiative marks a step toward OpenAI's goal of deploying 10 GW of compute capacity across the US, which will enable the operation of more than 2 million AI chips. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, emphasized the project's magnitude, indicating plans to expand beyond the initially committed $500 billion investment made earlier. Meanwhile, Elon Musk revealed that his AI firm, xAI, aims to deploy 50 million H100 equivalent units of AI compute within the next five years. This development may represent a 500-fold increase in computational power compared to the world's most powerful AI supercomputer just a year ago. Musk's ambitious plan comes alongside previous commitments from private sector leaders to build AI infrastructure amid reports of delays and internal conflicts within the $500 billion initiative led by US President Donald Trump. Despite challenges, the project is still viewed as a significant undertaking in the AI and crypto sectors.
