OFAC Sanctions Russian Hosting Provider for Enabling Crypto Theft
The U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has sanctioned the Russian hosting provider Aeza Group for its involvement in facilitating cybercriminal activities such as ransomware attacks and darknet drug markets targeting victims worldwide, including the U.S. Aeza Group, a bulletproof hosting provider based in St. Petersburg, offers infrastructure that allows cybercriminals to operate without fear of law enforcement intervention. The sanctions block all properties and interests of Aeza Group and its affiliated entities within U.S. jurisdiction and prohibit U.S. persons from transacting with them. The Treasury also named several executives associated with Aeza Group, who have previously been arrested for hosting drug marketplaces. The action included the designation of a cryptocurrency wallet linked to Aeza Group that had received over $350,000 in illicit funds, indicating the extent of its operations supporting malware exploitation and drug trafficking on a global scale.
