Monero 51% Attack Disrupted by Alleged DDoS Attack on Qubic Mining Pool
An attempted 51% attack on Monero was reportedly disrupted by a DDoS attack targeting the Qubic mining pool. Sergey Ivancheglo, associated with the attack, mentioned a drop in the attacking pool's hashrate from 2.6 GH/s to 0.8 GH/s due to the DDoS. Ivancheglo claimed the attack was costless, leveraging a presumed control over a botnet for mining. In response to queries, he asserted that his team implemented protective measures against the disruption, declaring an ongoing battle with attackers. Data showed that Qubic's direct queries returned normal response times, suggesting no effective DDoS attack. Ivancheglo also alleged that the developer of XMRig software coordinated these attacks, pointing to conversations in online forums. Qubic's mining operation had previously gained significant market share in Monero before a planned network takeover emerged, prompting community backlash. The mined Monero funds operations for the Qubic ecosystem, which offers better mining profitability than Monero itself, complicating the narrative around the attack.
