Metaplanet surpasses Cleanspark with $108M Bitcoin buy
Japanese Bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet has acquired an additional 1,005 BTC for $108 million, surpassing mining company Cleanspark to become the fifth-largest corporate holder of Bitcoin. Metaplanet now holds a total of 13,350 BTC, valued at approximately $1.45 billion at current market prices. The latest purchase coincides with a bond refinancing strategy, allowing Metaplanet to issue 30 billion yen ($208 million) in 0% ordinary bonds to fund more Bitcoin acquisitions. The firm plans to buy back earlier bonds and has set ambitious targets to raise $5.4 billion and acquire 210,000 BTC by 2027, aiming to become the second-largest corporate holder of Bitcoin. Following these developments, Metaplanet's stock experienced a 9% increase, reflecting a 350% rise since the start of 2025. CEO Simon Gerovich indicated that the firm aims to hold 100,000 BTC by 2026, significantly increasing its previous target. Meanwhile, Michael Saylor, founder of Strategy, hinted at ongoing Bitcoin purchases, suggesting a long-term view on Bitcoin's value.
