Metaplanet surpasses Cleanspark with $108M Bitcoin buy
Japanese Bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet has overtaken mining company Cleanspark to become the fifth-largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, acquiring an additional 1,005 BTC for $108 million. Metaplanet now holds a total of 13,350 BTC, valued at approximately $1.45 billion. The firm executed this purchase through a bond refinancing strategy, issuing $208 million in zero-interest bonds to fund further Bitcoin acquisitions. As part of this strategy, Metaplanet aims to increase its holdings to 100,000 BTC by 2026 and is targeting 210,000 BTC by 2027, which could position it as the second-largest corporate holder if current trends continue. The announcement also led to a 9% increase in Metaplanet's stock price. Additionally, CEO Simon Gerovich indicated a strong yield on the BTC investments, achieving a yield of 349% year-to-date, signaling the firm's aggressive accumulation strategy in a competitive market.
