Metaplanet Aims to Raise $5.3 Billion to Buy More Bitcoin
Metaplanet, a Japanese Bitcoin treasury, announced plans to raise $5.3 billion through the issuance of 555 million shares to increase its Bitcoin holdings. The company currently possesses 8,888 Bitcoin valued at about $934 million. CEO Simon Gerovich highlighted that the stock offering would be priced above market value, which deviates from the usual discount seen in similar financings. He described Bitcoin as a new benchmark for capital formation. Metaplanet, likened to Asia's MicroStrategy for its strategic approach to Bitcoin investments, seeks to acquire a total of 210,000 Bitcoin by 2027, representing about 1% of the total Bitcoin supply. The company's stock surged by 24% as Bitcoin trades around $105,000, recovering from a recent dip. Metaplanet's aggressive strategy reflects a broader trend of firms accumulating Bitcoin as a reserve asset.
