MetaMask adds Google and Apple logins to streamline wallet setup
MetaMask, the self-custodial crypto wallet by Consensys, has launched a new feature allowing wallet creation and restoration via Google or Apple accounts, powered by Web3Auth. This innovation aims to simplify onboarding for new users by eliminating the need to manually manage a 12-word recovery phrase, which has traditionally been a barrier in the crypto space. Users can now authenticate more conveniently using their familiar login credentials, while still retaining the option to use a recovery phrase for added security. The feature is currently available on the browser extension (version 13.0.0 and above), with mobile support coming soon. Wallets linked to Google or Apple accounts will automatically sync networks, tokens, and accounts across devices, thereby reducing onboarding friction. However, this reliance on third-party providers does raise concerns regarding privacy and security, especially if users lose access to their social accounts. Nevertheless, the backup recovery phrase provides a safeguard against potential issues.
