Massachusetts Attorney General Alleges Prediction Market Kalshi Violating Gambling Laws
Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell has filed a lawsuit against the prediction market Kalshi, alleging that the platform is violating state gambling laws by offering sports event contracts without the necessary licenses. The lawsuit highlights that since introducing these sports contracts in January 2025, Kalshi’s operations closely resemble those of licensed sports wagering entities like FanDuel. Campbell is seeking to halt Kalshi’s offerings in Massachusetts, demanding compliance with licensing requirements and requesting monetary and other forms of relief. Although Kalshi provides various prediction markets, the state’s focus is currently on its sports betting products. The attorney general's office categorizes Kalshi's financial contracts as sports wagering, which legally require operators to obtain specific state licenses. This action reflects the growing scrutiny over prediction markets that deal with sports outcomes in relation to established gambling regulations.
