Ledger faces backlash over ending Nano S hardware wallet support
Ledger is facing criticism for its decision to end support for the nearly decade-old Nano S hardware wallet, which has been largely used for long-term cryptocurrency storage. Although the Nano S, introduced in 2016, will continue to function, Ledger will stop providing updates due to memory limitations that hinder its ability to support new applications and features. Users expressed their frustration and confusion online, raising concerns about future hardware purchases and the device's security. Ledger's CTO, Charles Guillemet, explained that the rapid expansion of blockchain technologies has rendered the Nano S inadequate for updates. While Ledger encourages users to purchase newer models like the Nano X or Nano S Plus, they assure that basic functions like sending and receiving cryptocurrencies will remain operational on the Nano S for the foreseeable future, pending major changes to protocols. The company is also offering a discount to Nano S owners for upgrading to supported devices.
