Judge allows testimony on ‘feasible’ Tornado Cash code changes
The second week of Roman Storm's trial saw Judge Katherine Failla permit a witness to testify about potential modifications to Tornado Cash aimed at preventing its criminal use. The witness, Philip Werlau from AnChain.AI, will argue that Storm could have implemented features to deter illicit activities but chose not to. Failla's ruling came in response to a defense motion seeking to exclude this testimony, emphasizing that it remains relevant if the modifications discussed are technologically feasible. Storm faces serious charges, including money laundering, operating an unlicensed money transmitter, and conspiracy to violate US sanctions via Tornado Cash. As the trial progresses, the prosecution has introduced testimony from various sources, including hackers and FBI agents, detailing the misuse of the crypto mixing service. The outcome of Storm's trial could differ from that of Alexey Pertsev, another Tornado Cash co-founder convicted in the Netherlands. The trial began on July 14 and is expected to last three to four weeks, with expected conclusions by the end of the week.
