John Smedley, a well-known figure in the gaming industry and former CEO of Daybreak Game Company, is venturing into Web3 gaming with a new AAA shooter called Reaper Actual. His studio, Distinct Possibility Studios (DPS), successfully raised $30.5 million in a funding round led by major investors. These funds will support the development of an open-world massively multiplayer online first-person shooter (MMOFPS) that will incorporate the Tezos layer-2 blockchain, Etherlink. This integration aims to enable tradeable Web3 components like characters and skins within the game. Smedley expressed confidence in the collaborative vision shared with the Tezos Foundation, emphasizing the importance of gameplay. Known for co-creating iconic games like EverQuest and PlanetSide 2, Smedley plans to launch Reaper Actual on platforms such as Steam and the Epic Games Store. The DPS team is also set to announce an alpha release in the coming weeks, which will provide access to the game and its on-chain tradeable assets.
