Iran orders crypto exchange curfew after $100M Nobitex hack
The central bank of Iran has imposed strict operating hours for domestic crypto exchanges following a $100 million hack of Nobitex by a pro-Israel hacker group. As reported by Chainalysis, exchanges can now operate only between 10 am and 8 pm. This curfew aims to reduce the risk of further attacks, as incidents are easier to manage during the day. The Nobitex hack was executed by the hacker group Gonjeshke Darande, which infiltrated the exchange's systems and stole crypto assets including Bitcoin and Ether. Many of the stolen assets were burned, indicating a politically motivated act intended to undermine the Iranian regime. As a response, Nobitex has shut down external access and stated that user assets will be covered by its Reserve Fund. The exchange plays a crucial role in Iran's crypto ecosystem, with inflows significantly surpassing those of other Iranian exchanges.
