Interpol announced over a thousand arrests and the seizure of around $100 million in a crackdown against illegal crypto miners in Angola. This operation led to the dismantling of 25 mining centers operated by 60 Chinese nationals, with equipment seized valued at over $37 million. The Angolan government plans to allocate the seized resources to vulnerable areas. The crackdown is part of a broader cybercrime operation across Africa, resulting in 1,209 arrests and the recovery of more than $97 million. In April 2024, Angola implemented a mining ban due to significant power distribution issues, despite the general legality of digital assets in the country. This ban has been acknowledged by the Chinese embassy, warning residents of penalties for engaging in virtual currency mining activities. Concerns regarding heavy energy consumption from crypto mining have led to similar crackdowns in various countries, including regions in Russia and certain states in the U.S. with their own regulations regarding mining activities.
