India's Enforcement Directorate has frozen $4.8 million in assets belonging to Chirag Tomar, who is currently imprisoned in the U.S. for a $20 million crypto scam involving counterfeit Coinbase websites. Authorities seized 18 properties in Delhi and froze several bank accounts associated with Tomar, 31, his relatives, and associates. Tomar orchestrated a sophisticated phishing scheme that tricked users into revealing their account credentials by creating fake Coinbase sites. He laundered roughly $72 million worth of stolen crypto assets through trading platforms before converting them into Indian currency. Tomar was arrested in December 2023 upon returning to the U.S. and pleaded guilty in May 2024. The ED's investigation, which began after Tomar's arrest, is ongoing, with possible further seizures expected as they trace the money trail in this extensive fraud operation.
