Jack Dorsey has introduced Bitchat, an innovative messaging app that operates without an internet connection. Initially a weekend project, Bitchat uses a decentralized peer-to-peer messaging system via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks, eliminating reliance on servers or traditional telecommunications. This approach enables messages to hop between devices within a range of 30-100 meters while maintaining privacy through end-to-end encryption and random user identifiers. Bitchat demonstrates significant potential as a censorship-resistant communication tool, particularly useful in scenarios like disaster coordination, events with poor cellular coverage, and regions experiencing internet censorship. Currently in beta testing, the app has a simple setup process and facilitates direct communication without needing personal information.
