In August 2024, 4,100 BTC worth $243 million was stolen from a victim’s account through a sophisticated social engineering scam by three self-taught hackers, including 19-year-old Veer Chetal. They impersonated Google and Gemini support to trick the victim into handing over sensitive information, ultimately draining their crypto wallet. The hackers made several mistakes that led to their identification, including leaking their names during a livestream. ZachXBT, a crypto investigator, traced the funds and matched them to Chetal and his accomplices, who flaunted their gains online. Following the attack, Chetal attempted to further engage in illicit activities while out on bail, resulting in another $2 million scam. This case highlights the dangers of crypto crime, particularly among tech-savvy youth, and underscores the importance of parental vigilance against such schemes.
