How a teen stole $243M in Bitcoin, then did it again on bail
In August 2024, 4,100 BTC worth $243 million was stolen from a victim's account through a social engineering scam orchestrated by three hackers, including 19-year-old Veer Chetal. Using a combination of impersonation and tech support calls, the group tricked the victim into revealing personal information and Bitcoin private keys. The scam was discovered after investigators, led by ZachXBT, traced blockchain transactions back to the thieves, who had inadvertently leaked personal information during a livestream. Chetal, living extravagantly off the stolen funds, was subsequently arrested along with his accomplices. After pleading guilty, Chetal was released on bail but went on to commit another scam, stealing $2 million from a New Jersey resident by once again using fake support calls. This additional crime led authorities to recover illicit funds traced back to Chetal's residence, raising concerns about parental vigilance in the face of rising crypto crimes among teens.
