Harvard Management Company has invested $116 million in BlackRock's Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), holding approximately 1.9 million shares as of June 30, 2024. This significant investment makes it the fund's fifth-largest for the period, following major stakes in companies like Microsoft and Amazon. Harvard's endowment is valued at $53.2 billion, the largest among U.S. universities. The investment marks Harvard's ongoing interest in cryptocurrency, as it previously explored similar assets starting around 2018. The SEC approved the BlackRock Bitcoin ETF and others in January 2024, and as of the latest data, the fund has accumulated over $86 billion in net assets. In a move to boost demand, the SEC recently raised the limit on permitted options contracts for all ETFs, including the iShares Bitcoin ETF.
