Germany ‘Failed to Seize’ 45,000 BTC Held by Movie2K Piracy Website: Arkham
Arkham Intelligence revealed that a tranche of 45,000 BTC linked to the Movie2K piracy website, valued at $5 billion, was not seized by German authorities during a confiscation in January 2024. Arkham noted that while the German government successfully sold off a separate seizure of Bitcoin for $3 billion shortly after, the Movie2K Bitcoin stash remained untouched until it was moved in January 2019 to new addresses. The CEO of Arkham, Miguel Morel, asserted that the recent activity pattern of the new wallet aligns with the Bitcoin cluster seized in early 2024, implying a strong connection to Movie2K's operations from 2008 to 2013. Movie2K's Bitcoin originated from defunct exchanges, such as Mt. Gox, further bolstering this link. If German authorities had waited to sell the Bitcoin seized in 2024, they could have earned $5.62 billion instead of the $2.88 billion realized in their quick sale.
