Solana’s new validator client, Firedancer, faces challenges in achieving its full potential due to the existing technical constraints of the Solana network. Douglas Colkitt, a former high-frequency trader, is testing an alternative called Frankendancer on Fogo, which is designed to allow Firedancer to operate faster by sacrificing some decentralization. Solana currently relies on a globally distributed set of validators, which can limit performance speed due to inherent network latency. As of now, Agave is the predominant client, running on about 90% of validators, while Firedancer accounts for around 10%. Colkitt highlights that high-frequency trading requires lower latency than what Solana can currently provide. Consequently, Fogo aims to enhance speed by co-locating validators in strategic global locations. While Firedancer may excel in testing environments like Fogo, its potential remains constrained on the Solana network. This experiment underscores the ongoing tension between speed and decentralization in blockchain technology.
