Family of Ex-OpenAI Researcher Turn to Crypto to Fund Disputed Death Probe
The family of Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI researcher whose death in 2024 was ruled a suicide by the authorities, is contesting the conclusion. They allege the investigation was mishandled and have launched their own inquiries into what they describe as a staged scene. To support their case, supporters in the crypto community have raised over $140,000 through contributions and have even created a meme coin on the Solana blockchain called the Justice for Suchir (SUCHIR) token. Although the coin peaked at $0.015 before collapsing significantly in value, the funds have provided some relief to Balaji's family, who are facing mounting legal expenses and difficulties in finding representation willing to take the case. Their legal efforts involve a lawsuit against the City of San Francisco and its police department, alleging that critical evidence was not properly investigated. Balaji had been a vocal critic of OpenAI's practices, which many believe intensified scrutiny surrounding his death and its classification.
