Ex-Rugby Player Sentenced For $900K Crypto Mining Ponzi Scheme
Shane Donovan Moore, a former semi-pro rugby player, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for defrauding over 40 investors out of more than $900,000 through a fraudulent crypto mining scheme. From January 2021 to October 2022, he operated Quantum Donovan LLC, falsely promising investors 1% daily returns from non-existent crypto mining rigs. Instead of investing their money, Moore appropriated the funds for personal luxuries, including luxury apartments and designer goods, while using some to pay earlier investors to maintain the Ponzi scheme. His actions left significant emotional and psychological damage on the victims, who collectively lost over $387,000. U.S. District Judge Tana Lin emphasized the broader effects of the fraud, while authorities highlighted a growing trend in crypto-related crimes. Moore will serve his sentence in federal prison and was ordered to pay restitution, though specific repayment details were not disclosed.
