Ex-Bitfury Executive Receives Senate Nod to Head Banking Regulator
Jonathan Gould, formerly the chief legal officer at Bitfury, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to lead the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). The Senate voted 50 to 45, largely along party lines, in favor of Gould's appointment. His confirmation comes amid House discussions over the Genius Act, which seeks to establish a regulatory framework for stablecoin issuers in the U.S. The OCC, under this proposed framework, would oversee federally licensed stablecoin issuers, impacting a market valued at over $250 billion. Gould previously served as chief counsel at the OCC from 2018 to 2021 and has held positions in top law firms including Jones Day. His appointment aligns with the trend of pro-crypto regulators taking key roles in federal financial agencies. This comes as notable crypto figures, such as Paul Atkins at the SEC, also secure regulatory positions.
