Ethereum Plans zkEVM Launch on Layer 1 Within a Year
The Ethereum Foundation is set to integrate zero-knowledge technology into its layer-1 blockchain within a year through the launch of a zkEVM. This advancement will replace traditional block execution processes by allowing validators to only verify ZK-proofs, which are compact cryptographic receipts affirming that transactions were executed correctly. The proposed roadmap emphasizes the need for multiple independent zero-knowledge virtual machines (zkVMs) to enhance security without compromising speed. The initiative aims for zkVMs to produce proofs in under 10 seconds, requiring minimal hardware resources to democratize participation in securing the network. The transition will occur gradually, initially incorporating optional ZK clients alongside existing validator setups. As the reliability of these ZK clients is proven, the Ethereum network is expected to shift towards mandatory proof verification, capitalizing on the accelerating momentum in zero-knowledge research and development.
