The Ethereum Foundation has identified interoperability as its primary user experience (UX) focus for the next six to 12 months. Researchers emphasize that improving interoperability presents significant opportunities for enhancing user experiences. This initiative includes intent-based architecture that allows users to express intents while the network manages underlying transactions. It aims to streamline cross-chain communication across layer-1 and rollups while addressing the fragmentation challenge brought on by various layer-2 protocols. Efforts are structured into three development streams: initialization focuses on intent-based architecture with projects like the open intents framework, which is a modular system to facilitate intents in Ethereum development. The second stream aims to accelerate messaging speed across layers, while the third is dedicated to finalization, exploring solutions for zero-knowledge proof enhancements and layer-1 finality improvements. Key interoperability standards are also being developed to ensure a consistent cross-chain user experience, addressing critical elements for smoother cross-chain operations.
