The Ethereum Foundation has announced a major initiative focusing on interoperability within Ethereum's Layer-2 networks, marking a strategic pivot from prior efforts to scale throughput and reduce costs. The initiative emphasizes interoperability as a critical component of user experience, particularly over the next 6-12 months. Key goals include enhancing interoperability, speed, and finality, as outlined in the Improve UX roadmap. Central to this effort is the planned Ethereum Interoperability Layer (EIL), a trustless messaging system that aims to streamline cross-chain interactions and make them feel like single-chain execution. This will be complemented by a shared infrastructure for user-declared intents, promoting a unified user experience across different networks. Additionally, proposals such as ERC-7828 and ERC-7683 are underway to standardize wallet behavior and transaction flows. Speed improvements are also on the horizon, with expected reductions in Ethereum confirmation times to 15–30 seconds and faster Layer-2 settlement. If successful, these enhancements could significantly boost liquidity and capital efficiency in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.
