Ethereum core developer Federico Carrone has pledged $500,000 to the legal fund of Roman Storm, a co-founder of Tornado Cash, following his own detention in Turkey. Carrone's decision to increase his donation from $50,000 stems from his 24-hour detention linked to an Ethereum privacy protocol. Storm was indicted in 2023 facing charges related to money laundering and conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitter. Recently, a New York jury reached a guilty verdict for Storm on one charge but deadlocked on others, paving the way for a possible retrial. The Tornado Cash co-founder is currently raising funds, targeting $7 million for his defense, as the legal proceedings could extend for months. Despite the challenges, supporters claim that writing code should not be penalized. Storm’s sentencing for the guilty verdict has yet to be scheduled, and he may face up to five years in prison.
