Elliptic, Internet Watch Foundation Team Up to Combat Crypto Financing of Child Abuse Material
Blockchain intelligence firm Elliptic has partnered with the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) to combat the financing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) through cryptocurrency. This collaboration grants Elliptic access to IWF's virtual currency alerts, which provide real-time data on cryptocurrency transactions associated with CSAM. A 2024 IWF report revealed that over 60% of child abuse websites offer cryptocurrencies as payment options. These websites increasingly utilize privacy coins like Monero, which complicates tracking efforts for organizations like the IWF and Elliptic. The partnership is part of Elliptic's larger initiative to create a safer digital ecosystem by leveraging data integration and strategic discussions on payment system exploitation. The IWF is also looking to expand its membership within the blockchain/crypto sector to better disrupt the commercialization of CSAM, aided by organizations like Elliptic.
